Diane McLeod
Registered Physiotherapist

Credentials:
-Hon.BSc.(1984)UWO
-BSc.(Physical Therapy)(1988)University of Toronto
-Member of CPA/OPA-orthopedic,sports,women's health divisions
-Certified Pilates Instructor-matwork specialist (2010) Toronto
-Balanced Body Program Instructor at ABPT

History:
Over the 25 years that I have been a physical therapist, I have had the opportunity to work in both the hospital (inpatient and outpatient settings) and in private practice focusing mainly on orthopaedic physical therapy. After 17 years, I took a short leave to raise my family. At this time I was introduced to Pilates-based movement re-education by a colleague and began my study and training in this discipline. I could see the potential that this form of movement based therapy could have for the rehab client and was excited to learn more about this discipline in order to develop a treatment program (Balanced Body Program) designed to address postural dysfunctions, retrain core support and stabilization, alleviate chronic neck/back/shoulder/knee issues, and balance re-educaton. Each client is given an individualized assessment and is taught how to support their bodies from centre, stabilizing through the myofascial lines of movement.

During my years of practice as a physical therapist, I have taken numerous courses including manual therapy, neurology, respiratory and exercise therapy and I look forward to the opportunity to combine my physical therapy experience and Pilates training to provide individualized treatment and exercise program instruction.

Having worked with physiotherapists and chiropractors, she has experience with a variety of conditions. She is trained in Esalen® Deep Tissue Technique, Manual Lymph Drainage, Combined Decongestive Therapy as well as Swedish Massage.

Esalen® Massage is a technique using long, integrating strokes, creating an experience of deep relaxation supporting the natural ability of body and mind to self-heal. This technique focuses on the connective tissue and deeper layers of muscle tissue. It aims to release the chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes, manipulation of the connective tissue and deep pressure on the contracted areas, either following or going across the fibres of the muscles, tendons and fascia. This technique causes a feeling of tension release for the day or two following but may cause some soreness during or right after the massage.

In the Fall of 2012, Maddie completed her certification in Lymphedema and Combined Decongestive Therapy. Using Manual Lymph Drainage, Maddie can decrease swelling allowing her clients to regain regular size and function of the affected areas. Using very light rhythmical touch, MLD causes an increase in flow of lymph through the body thus decreasing swelling and pain. MLD can treat a range of conditions from general pain, constipation to sprains and swelling. Decongestive therapy combines MLD with compression bandaging to treat the condition of Lymphedema.

Maddie’s passion and desire to help in rehabilitation, repair and pain management enables her clients to achieve their goals and restore their lifestyles after injury, condition treatment and stress related conditions. She enjoys working with clients on their path to healing, and makes great efforts to improve overall wellness.
